Team ForGood: Footballer Chris Smalling joins line-up of celebrity green investors

England footballer Chris Smalling has announced the launch of a venture capital consultancy that aims to invest in companies that are addressing the world’s largest environmental challenges.

Dubbed ForGood, the outfit is described as “a purpose driven family of investors, creators and storytellers committed to scaling ideas to build a better future”, which will aim to invest between £50,000 and £1m in pre-seed-to-Series A in the UK and globally businesses.

ForGood’s existing portfolio of 11 companies, includes natural laundry detergent Dirty Labs, plant-based meat brand Heura, and Matthew Kenney Cuisine.

Smalling, who currently plays for AS Roma, has joined a roster of co-founders and partners that includes entrepreneur, investor and activist Sebastiano Cossia Castiglioni and Rebecca Wheeler, a marketing expert who founded Library, a certified B-Corp creative agency.

“I want to look back on my life as someone who achieved lots on the pitch, but also someone who made a difference on a much greater scale,” the former Manchester United star said. “We’re on a simple but huge mission to transform the world for the better and drive a global movement for good.

“Investing in a more sustainable future shouldn’t have any barriers, and at ForGood we believe that connecting people with a common cause has the power to bring change on a global scale. We want to play a key role in accelerating an ecosystem that actively invests and champions the next generation of responsible businesses, with the ambition to drive a movement of doing things ‘for good’.”

ForGood said its wider team included experts in the investment and sustainability sectors, VCs, investors, strategists, food scientists, and brand marketeers with backgrounds in consultancies, funds, and start-ups.
